MILIONIA CELEBENSIS – UNDER GLASS DOME
Your Milionia celebensis is a moth from the family of the Geometridae and can be found on Sulawesi in Indonesia. The geometer moths family’s scientific name derives from the Ancient Greek geo, ‘the earth’, and metron, ‘measure’, in reference to the way their larvae, or inchworms, appear to “measure the earth” as they move along in a looping fashion.
Although many people overlook them, moths are numerous and widespread, with more than 23,000 species described. Moths play a key role on the ecosystems where they live by providing a source of food for a variety of predators, both as adults and as caterpillars. They also have a positive impact on the plants they eat by pollinating flowers while feeding on their nectar. Finally, they are a key indicator of the health of our environment, being very sensitive to any change in their habitat.
